there is a nice website called critique.org. You can request a review of a book So far, I have found the reviewers of stories thoughtful and insightful. I have no experience with the full book reviews.
I also have the name of a great editor who reads entire manuscripts at a very low price. A former NYT editor he takes hard copies and edits them with his green felt pen. Great for gross plot concepts, conflicts and of course grammar and spelling
I love editing myself, because that means the plot and characters are placed, but most importantly the climax and wrap up are planned and written.

And the hooker he identified (but he actually said, "Mommy, is that a prostitute?") was a 6-foot-+ tall Amazon black woman (although color did not really matter except that we were in all-non-white neighborhood where I figured she was going to be more popular than my uh, precocious?, son), who was wearing skin-tight not-a-wrinkle-in-sight black leather pants and a leapord-print bra. And she may have been considerably taller than my 6+ foot estimate. When we first saw her, from the back, she was bending over a postal box to write something on a letter or postcard. As in bending at the waist. She stood up just as we walked by, and just as Gene made his rather unfortunate observation. Thank God when I said, oh shit we need a cab NOW he also immediately learned how to hail a cab.

I know what you mean. And you may be right. But now imagine this as the first of three commercials, with the third giving information about the book. Would that make more sense?

The way I look at the internet, you have to deliver things in small packages and assume that 90% of the people will stop at the small package. But another 10% will drill down for more.

Or look at it another way. I could either make something weird and modestly clever, that's short and self-contained, and that could go viral, or a straight-up book trailer that will be MUCH more difficult to make, will be a good deal longer, and will have a far worse chance of going viral.

I thought it was funny, terrible advertising, but funny.
I am of the school of thought which says a commercial should always tell you something about the product, if it doesn't, it is a bad commercial that, even if remembered, won't stick the -product- in your mind.
You could swap out immortal for any other book or, quite frankly, anything and this commercial wouldn't change.

Now, that said, could it still drive traffic?
Probably, some.
Just not as much as if you were able to get the viewer genuinely interested in the book.
A good number may very likely go "Hehe." and move on without actually investigating the book itself. Despite the fact that if they read the book they would find it funny, there is nothing in the commercial to let them know the -book- is funny.

Just my two heavily critical cents.
I'm not sure exactly how book trailers are supposed to work either although I'll let you know if I have any ideas.

Well, you are more likely to anger cat people than to have people think it is funny. I think you are very funny. I do not like cats, primarily because I am allergic to them. And I do not think the spot is funny. So ... back to the drawing board? Or video board?

Or just go with text? "You start with smoke signals and grunts."

None of the cars were moving, but the drivers were really great, actually.
Geoffrey, I love your enthusiasm. You win "fan of the day" at least.

Hellenic Immortal's timeline is probably going to have it out in 2012, hopefully in the first couple of months of the year, but hang in there; it might not be until May.

Until then, what I need is as many vocal, enthusiastic readers as I can get...! Building readers helps! Especially in negotiating with distributors and what-not. So keep on shouting... :-)

one word ... amazing ...

I literally finished the whole book in a little over two days of casual reading.

Not only have I recommended the book to my wife - but also my dad - who I think will both equally enjoy it.

So now I really only have one question -

When does the sequel come out? =)

OK, yes, he is my son but trust me, my critiques of his writings have rarely been this positive--and that's been going on since his 16th birthday and the college app essays. (Have I apologized enough for that already?)

I caught a review of your book on wired.com - which alone intrigued me - but then there was a link to the first few pages of the sequel to Immortal - which I couldn't help but read.

And after just those 4 pages - I purchased Immortal from amazon just like that. I can already tell if Adam has learned one thing in over 60,000 years - it's a great sense of humor and wit.

I'm looking forward to reading it when it arrives in a couple of days and will post back when I have finished!

That's great. See, I'm trying to understand that mentality, but I can't quite get my mind around it. The "don't you think it's unfair that..." idea has somehow become the only defining metric for so many people. I think a lot of things are unfair, but if you're deciding it's more fair to allow a kid to die for lack of health care so you can prevent the possibility that someone will get a better deal for their health care coverage than you have, you need to go back and reassess your personal morality.

Great article, Gene! I can almost hear (and smell) the two old ladies who came in for coffee and cigarettes in the afternoon. (*puff* there's nothing wrong with smoking, said in a voice drowning in black-lung). Ah, Friendly's.

A couple of years back a friend at work, an evangelical christian from the south, said to me during the discussions of universal healthcare, "Aren't you mad this is going to raise your taxes? Aren't you mad there will be people taking advantage who aren't really in need?" My answer was, "I can spare a few hundred dollars more a year for someone who needs help. As to those who take advantage, there will always be someone gaming the system, why penalize those who are desperate?" He actually said to me, "Wow, you're a better person than I am." (and, btw, he knows I'm an atheist.)
