Whispersync for The Spaceship Next Door

As I mentioned at the beginning of the week, The Spaceship Next Door is now an audiobook!GeneDoucette_TheSpaceshipNextDoor_Audio

I also mentioned I’d let everyone know when “Whispersync” was available, and in saying that I was relying upon the received wisdom from many online resources, including the kind people over on the KBoards and on the FAQ on the Audible.com dashboard (ACX), and I apologize if that’s about three too many links and acronyms for whenever you happen to be reading this.

(Also, side note, if you have never seen KBoards before now and you’re a writer, you should go there and read up.)

The reasons given for the length of time between a book being made available in audio and a book being made available in audio for Whispersync is this: the audio version is rather literally synced up to the digital (non-audio) version.

I imagine this is being done by elves in a sweatshop somewhere but I don’t know. What I know is it was supposed to be a labor-intensive event. This didn’t really turn out to be the case, because five days after the book went live, Whispersync went live.

So maybe they hired a LOT of elves.

Now then: Whispersync does two things for you folks. First, it enables you to toggle back and forth between reading the ebook and having the ebook read to you, and by that I mean the ebook will pick up where the audiobook left off, and vice versa.

The second thing it does for you is make the audiobook cheaper, if you already happen to own a digital copy of The Spaceship Next Door.

How much cheaper?

Here’s what it looks like on my Amazon page. (Yes I bought my own ebook, shut up.)

So: if you already own the book, liked it, and think maybe you want to have someone read it to you, maybe someone whose vocal stylings are vaguely reminiscent of Garrison Keillor only with better comic timing, you can now get it for only $3.47.

Likewise, if you only want the audiobook and don’t want to spend the full price for it, $5.99 + $3.47 is still cheaper than $24.95.

Now obviously, Whispersync is an Amazon/Audible product. (Note: Amazon owns Audible.) The feature is unavailable on iTunes, and that’s unfortunate, and if you have a predisposition toward not using Amazon, this is probably less exciting for you.

Otherwise, sign up! Give Whispersync a try, tell me what you think!
