Hellenic Immortal preview

A preview of things to come

As promised, today I’m offering a short preview of Hellenic Immortal, the sequel to Immortal.  What you’re about to read is either the prologue or an interlude to the main story… I haven’t actually decided yet.

(The problem is the book already has a prologue, and while “On Gods and Succubi” is most certainly prologue-worthy, I don’t think having two prologues make a tremendous amount of sense.)

The attached piece stands on its own, so you can still enjoy it having never read Immortal.  That said, why haven’t you read Immortal?  Seriously; you’re embarrassing me.

I need to warn you that “On Gods and Succubi” is slightly NSFW.  You might also not want your mother reading it.

I’m really enjoying “Immortal”. Your story-telling and style remind me of the best of Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett(with a twist of Mario Acevedo)…

Unfortunately, I won’t be able to purchase any more of your books as long as this is your license:

“This ebook is licensed for your personal enjoyment only. This ebook may not be re-sold or given away to other people. If you would like to share this book with another person, please purchase an additional copy for each person. If you’re reading this book and did not purchase it, or it was not purchased for your use only, then please return to Smashwords.com and purchase your own copy. Thank you for respecting the hard work of this author.”

This is NOT how books work. Surely I would not copy nor distribute your work inappropriately – I do support authors and, prior to reading your license, wanted to support and encourage you to write more excellent books. But if I want to share your work with my wife or family – as long as I am not making illegal copies to do it – you should not have a problem with that.

Now, this may not really be _your_ license. But when it comes down to it – you’re either part of the problem or part of the solution. Right now you are part of the problem.

      Dan–

First off, I’m very glad you’re enjoying Immortal! I’m equally glad you took the time to bring up the above passage.

What you’ve identified is legal boilerplate that Smashwords REQUIRED us to put in the book. That is to say, they would not accept it for distribution– to Apple, to Nook, to Kobo and so on– unless this paragraph was in the licensing. The reason, I think, is that Smashwords creates and distributes DRM-free books, which it IS possible for one to copy and redistribute, post to a website, email to a friend, or whatever.

We could not have provided the book in the many formats in which it’s currently available without this legalese. It is not in the Amazon Kindle version of the book. Then again, the Kindle version is not DRM-free.

I share your opinion that this is not how books work, and I think the industry as a whole is still trying to figure out how to allow for file-sharing in books without losing control of copyrighted material at the same time.
